Make a a drive through the Axarquia is not just a trip, it is an experience that connects with the purest essence of Andalusia. But why should you spend three days exploring this region instead of staying on the beach?

Absolute freedomUnlike public transport (which is practically non-existent in many inland villages), having your own car allows you to stop whenever you want, change your plans as you go along, and discover those places that don't appear in the guidebooks. See a spectacular viewpoint? You stop. Smell freshly baked bread in a village bakery? You go in.

Manageable distancesThe Axarquia is compact. No village is more than 40 minutes drive from Nerja, which means that you can visit several in the same day without exhausting yourself. The distances between villages are short (usually between 10 and 25 km), but each has its own personality.

Variety in the same journeyIn the same morning you can be strolling through a white mountain village, and in the afternoon sunbathing on a quiet beach. This versatility makes the route perfect for all types of travellers.

Best time of the yearThe Axarquia shines especially in spring (March to May), When the almond trees are in blossom and temperatures are around 20-25°C, perfect for driving and walking. Essential Preparations for your Road Trip

A good trip starts with good preparation. You don't need a lot, but these preparations will save you from mishaps and maximise your enjoyment.

Car Rental

If you don't arrive with your own vehicle, renting a car is very easy both in Nerja and in Malaga city.

Recommended companies:

• At Malaga airportGoldcar, Centauro, Record Go (they usually have better prices than the big multinationals).

Type of vehicleA normal car is more than enough. The roads in the Axarquia are narrow and winding, but well paved. You don't need a 4×4 unless you plan to do very specific mountain routes. A small or medium sized car will make it easier to park in villages with narrow streets.

Approximate prices25-40€ per day in mid-season (depending on how far in advance you book). In summer it can go up to 50-70€/day. I recommend booking online at least 2 weeks in advance to get a better price. Petrol is around 1,50-1,60€/litre.

Important adviceTake out comprehensive insurance with no excess. Mountain roads and narrow village car parks can play tricks on you.

DAY 1: Route of the White Villages of the East

Departure from Nerja - Total distance of the day: 90 km - Driving time: 2 hours (no stops)

This first day you will immerse yourself in the essence of the Axarquía: white villages perched in the mountains, muscatel wine, labyrinthine streets and breathtaking views. It's the most photogenic and popular route, but with this guide you'll find places that the average tourist doesn't discover.

STOP 1: FRIGILIANA (9:00 - 12:00)

📍 Distance from Nerja: 6 km : 6 km ⏱ Time: 15 minutes

Frigiliana is, without exaggeration, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. It has won multiple awards as «Most beautiful village» and when you arrive you will understand why. It is your first stop and it is advisable to arrive early (around 9:00 AM) before the tourist groups arrive.

What to see in Frigiliana:

Mudejar Quarter (Barribarto): The heart of the village. Cobbled streets so narrow that there is barely room for a car, whitewashed houses decorated with pots of geraniums on every corner, and a silence that is only broken by the occasional lazy cat in the sun. Get lost without a map, it's the best way to enjoy it.

Viewpoint with panoramic viewsFrom several points in the village you have spectacular views of the coast, Nerja, and even on clear days you can see the African coast. The best is next to the Church of San Antonio.

Church of San Antonio de PaduaBeautiful 17th century church in Renaissance style, with its bell tower overlooking the village.

Craft shopsFrigiliana has many shops selling hand-painted ceramics, textiles, and local honey. Beware of «tourist traps» selling things from China; look for the workshops where you see the artisan at work.

Where to have breakfast: Café-Bar El Adarve (Calle Real, 10). Toast with local extra virgin olive oil, grated tomato and ham. Terrace with views. Price: 5-7€.

Parking: The best thing to do is to park in the Los Llanos car park (free), 5 minutes walk uphill from the centre. The car parks in the centre (Calle Chorrera) are chargeable: €1.50/hour. Arriving before 10am almost guarantees a free parking space.

Recommended time: 2.5 - 3 hours (leisurely walk + breakfast + photos)

📸 Photo not to be missedHernando El Darra street, possibly the most photographed corner of the village. White houses, red geraniums, cobblestones, and views of the valley. Instagram gold.

💡 Local CouncilIf you can, buy a bottle of cane honey in a shop (Frigiliana's speciality, it is like dark, sweet molasses). The Nuestra Señora del Carmen sugar mill produces the only cane honey in Europe.

STOP 2: CÓMPETA (12:30 - 15:00)

📍 Distance from Frigiliana: 18 km : 18 km ⏱ Time: 25 minutes

The road from Frigiliana to Cómpeta is a spectacle in itself. Hairpin bends ascending through vineyards, centuries-old olive trees, and views of the Mediterranean that appear and disappear. Drive calmly and enjoy.

Cómpeta is known as the «wine village». This is where the famous muscatel wine from the Axarquía, a sweet wine with the «Sierras de Málaga» designation of origin that has centuries of tradition.

What to see in Cómpeta:

Almijara SquareThe heart of the village. Large and sunny square surrounded by bars with terraces, perfect to have a drink and watch the local life. In the centre is the church and the atmosphere is relaxed.

Church of Our Lady of the AssumptionFrom the 16th century, with a characteristic Mudejar tower. The interior is simple but beautiful.

Muscat wine cellarsSeveral wine cellars in the village offer tours and tastings. Almijara Winery (Avenida de la Constitución) is small, family-run, and for €5 you get a tasting of 3 wines with an explanation. Highly recommended.

A walk through the Wine MuseumSmall museum explaining the winemaking tradition of the area (free entry, open from 11am to 2pm).

Where to eat: Restaurant El Pilón (Calle Laberinto, 8). Traditional menu, speciality: choto al ajillo (stewed kid, a typical Axarquia dish). Menu of the day: 12-15€. Also excellent stew dishes (puchero, tagarninas stew).

Recommended dishChoto al ajillo or ajoblanco (cold almond soup, typical in summer).

Unique experienceDon't leave without tasting the muscatel wine. It is sweet, usually served chilled, and goes perfectly with desserts or cheese. A bottle costs 8-12€ in the bodegas.

Approximate meal price15-20€ with drink.

Parking: Park on the Avenida de la Constitución (blue zone, 1€/hour) or look in streets near the square (there are usually free places if you walk 2-3 minutes).

💡 Local Council: If you visit Cómpeta in August, the Wine Night (15 August) is a spectacular festival where the whole village comes out onto the streets, there is live music, and the bodegas open to taste muscatel for free or for very little money. Of course, the village is packed to the rafters.

STOP 3: CANILLAS DE ALBAIDA (15:30 - 17:00)

📍 Distance from Cómpeta: 7 km : 7 km ⏱ Time: 12 minutes

Canillas de Albaida is a smaller and quieter village than Frigiliana or Cómpeta, but precisely for this reason it has a special charm. Here you feel the authentic Axarquia, without the tourist hustle and bustle.

What to see in Canillas de Albaida:

Mudejar minaret towerThe jewel of the village. A perfectly preserved 13th century Mudejar minaret, which was part of an ancient mosque and today stands next to the church. It is one of the few minarets of the Axarquia that are still standing.

Mirador de la SierraPanoramic views of Sierra Tejeda and the valley. On clear days the view reaches as far as the sea. Perfect to take a break, breathe fresh air and take pictures.

Walk through the villageCanillas has the atmosphere of a village frozen in time. Walk around aimlessly, say hello to the neighbours (they will all respond kindly), and enjoy the silence.

Optional activity: If you like gentle hiking, there is a 2-hour circular route (6 km) that leaves the village and runs through fields of almond and olive trees. Signposted and easy. Ask at the Town Hall for a map.

Local product to buy: Sugared almonds (in the local produce shop in Calle Real) and olive oil locally produced extra virgin olive oil (€10-12 per 1L bottle).

ParkingEasy and free of charge. Park in any street in the village or in the main square.

💡 Local Council: In Canillas they have a gastronomic curiosity: the San Marcos doughnuts (25 April). If you visit on that date, try them. The rest of the year, they are hard to find.

STOP 4: CÚTAR (Sunset - 17:30 - 19:00)

📍 Distance from Canillas: 12 km : 12 km : 12 km ⏱ Time: 18 minutes

Cútar is the smallest village on your route on day 1, with just 600 inhabitants. It's an optional detour but well worth it, especially to see the sunset.

Why visitPrecisely because it is small and authentic. There are no souvenir shops or tourist restaurants here. It's a village where people live their normal lives, and you have the privilege of getting a glimpse of this everyday life.

Viewpoint to watch the sunsetJust at the entrance to the village (coming from Canillas) there is a small viewpoint overlooking the valley of La Viñuela and the mountains. Around 18:30-19:00 in summer (17:30 in winter) the light is magical. Take some snacks and enjoy the spectacle.

Experience: Have a drink at the Bar La Plaza (the only bar in the village, in the main square). Beer: €1.50, soft drink: €1.20. The locals are very friendly and you'll probably end up chatting to someone who will tell you stories about the village.

Return to Nerja30 km - 35-40 minutes on a winding road with little traffic at that time of day.

Where to dine back in Nerja:

After a day in the mountains, you feel like something simple and good. I recommend:

• Ayo Restaurant (Burriana Beach): Famous for its giant paellas, informal atmosphere. 15-20€.
• Tapería Quero (Calle Puerta del Mar): Creative tapas and good wine. 12-18€.
• Or simply a fried fish in any beach bar in Calahonda or Burriana (10-15€).

DAY 2: Coast and Mountain Route (The Best of Both Worlds)

Departure from Nerja - Total distance of the day: 110 km - Driving time: 2.5 hours (no stops)

Day 2 is where you understand why the Axarquia is so special: in a few hours you go from drinking coffee in front of the sea to exploring a Moorish castle on the heights. It is the route of perfect contrast.

STOP 1: TORROX COSTA (9:00 - 11:00)

📍 Distance from Nerja: 10 km : 10 km : 10 km ⏱ Time15 minutes on the N-340

Torrox Costa boasts «the best climate in Europe», a title awarded by the University of Malaga based on average annual temperature (18°C), hours of sunshine and mildness of climate. I don't know if it's true, but certainly the promenade on a sunny day will make you believe it all.

What to do in Torrox Costa:

Walk along the promenadeThe promenade: At 9 kilometres long, it is one of the longest promenades in Spain. Perfect for walking, jogging or cycling (bike rental from 10€).

Breakfast in a beach bar in front of the sea: Chiringuito El Pirata (Paseo Marítimo de Poniente). Toast with avocado and tomato, fresh orange juice, coffee with sea views. Price: 7-9€. Barefoot on the sand, waves crashing, seagulls... that's how you start the day.

BeachIf it's hot (and it usually is in the Axarquia), take a quick dip. The beaches of Torrox are dark sandy, quiet, and less crowded than Nerja.

Curiosity: In Torrox Costa there is a Roman lighthouse (El Faro de Torrox), one of the few preserved Roman lighthouses in Spain. It is on the promenade, next to the sea.

ParkingFree on most of the promenade (white areas). In high season it can be hard to find, but outside July-August it is easy.

STOP 2: TORROX PUEBLO (11:30 - 13:00)

📍 Distance from Torrox Costa: 4 km : 4 km ⏱ Time: 8 minutes uphill

Now it's time to climb. In less than 10 minutes you go from sea level to 250 metres above sea level. Torrox Pueblo is the inland brother of Torrox Costa, completely different in atmosphere.

What to see in Torrox Pueblo:

Arab Old TownTorrox has an important Roman past (remains of a Roman villa have been found) but its old town dates back to the Arab period. Narrow streets, small squares and white houses.

Nuestra Señora de las Nieves HermitageSmall 17th century hermitage at the top of the village, with beautiful views.

Coastal/mountain contrastThe most interesting thing about Torrox is precisely that: in a few minutes you see how everything changes. The atmosphere, the rhythm of life, the temperature (it is usually 3-4°C less than on the coast), the architecture.

Where to have a drink: Bar Casa Juan (Plaza de la Constitución). Homemade tapas, local atmosphere. Beer + tapa: 2€.

Parking: Parking in the Plaza de la Constitución or nearby streets (free).

STOP 3: VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA (13:30 - 16:30)

📍 Distance from Torrox: 18 km : 18 km ⏱ Time: 20 minutes

Vélez-Málaga is the capital of the Axarquía and the largest town in the region (80.000 inhabitants). It is different from the small villages: here there is urban life, shops, bustling atmosphere. But its historic centre is a jewel.

What to see in Vélez-Málaga:

Vélez-Málaga Fortress (Castle)Moorish fortress from the 10th century which dominates the town from above. The walls are well preserved and from the top you have 360° views of the whole Axarquia, the sea and the mountains. Free admission. Opening hours: 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 (varies according to season).

Church of Santa María la MayorBuilt on the site of the old main mosque after the Christian conquest. A mixture of Mudejar and Gothic styles. Impressive tower.

Calle Real and the old townMain street of the historic centre, full of local shops, tapas bars, clothes shops. It is the artery of the village.

San Francisco neighbourhoodCharming old quarter, less touristic, perfect for a stroll.

Where to eat:

Restaurant Carmen La de Ronda (Calle Canalejas, 7). High traditional Andalusian cuisine. Try the axarquic dishMigas with frigate mackerel, chorizo, peppers and grapes (in season). Menu of the day: 12-14€. Menu: 18-25€.

Another option: Mesón Chinitas (Plaza de las Carmelitas). Generous portions, fritura malagueña, good local wines.

Time to exploreGive 2.5 - 3 hours to Velez. It's big, has a lot to see, and if you eat here you'll need time.

Parking: Park in the Municipal Market car park (Matadero Street) - free of charge. Or in the blue zone near the historic centre: €0.80/hour.

💡 Local Council: If you visit Vélez in Easter, The processions are spectacular. And in September they have the San Miguel Fair, one of the biggest fairs in the province.

STOP 4: TORRE DEL MAR (17:00 - 19:00)

📍 Distance from Vélez: 4 km : 4 km ⏱ Time: 8 minutes

Torre del Mar is the coastal area of Velez-Malaga. It is a lively seaside town, with a lot of local atmosphere (not so much foreign tourism), a long promenade, and a good offer of beach bars.

What to do in Torre del Mar:

PromenadeLong, well maintained, with a cycle path. You can rent bikes at various points (10-15€/hour) and cycle in the sea breeze.

Snack/coffee on the terrace: Tutti Frutti Ice Cream Parlour (Paseo Marítimo Levante). Incredible homemade ice creams. Try the muscatel wine ice cream (yes, you read that right) or the custard apple ice cream (typical fruit of the area). 2,50-4€.

Sunset on the beachTorre del Mar beach is dark sandy, wide, and the sunset from here (looking towards Nerja) is beautiful. Look for the Torre del Mar Lighthouse for the best sunset photos.

ParkingFree on most of the promenade.

STOP 5 (OPTIONAL): RINCÓN DE LA VICTORIA (19:30 - 21:00)

📍 Distance from Torre del Mar: 14 km : 14 km ⏱ Time: 15 minutes

This stop is optional if you still have energy and time. Rincón de la Victoria is the closest town to Malaga city in the Axarquia region.

Treasure CaveOne of the few caves of submarine origin in Europe. It has a history of legends of hidden treasures. Guided tour: 5€, lasts 30 min. Opening times: check online as they vary. If you arrive late, just stop by the promenade.

Dinner in front of the sea: Chiringuito Solymar (Rincón de la Victoria beach). Speciality: Grilled fish. Price: 18-25€. They also have good rice dishes.

Return to Nerja20 km - 20-25 minutes on the A-7/N-340.

DAY 3: Route of the Deep Interior (La Axarquía Auténtica)

Day 3 is for the adventurous. You enter the more inland, wilder, less touristy Axarquía. Here the roads become more winding, the villages smaller, and the experience more authentic. This is the route that separates the tourists from the travellers.

STOP 1: SALT FLATS (9:30 - 11:00)

📍 Distance from Nerja: 35 km : 35 km : 35 km ⏱ Time: 40 minutes

Salares is the minaret village par excellence of the Axarquía. It is small (about 200 inhabitants), whitewashed, silent, and has one of the best preserved Mudejar minaret towers in the whole region.

Road to SalaresThe MA-4102 from Vélez-Málaga is spectacular. Curves and more curves, climbing between mountains, with the scenery changing every kilometre. Put on some music, roll down the window, and enjoy the ride.

What to see in Salares:

Minaret Tower (Minaret)This 13th century Mudejar tower is the iconic image of the village. It is so well preserved that it looks like it was built yesterday. It was the minaret of the old mosque and when you look up you feel you are travelling back in time.

Stroll through labyrinthine streetsSalares is very small, you can cover the whole area in 30 minutes. But do it slowly. The streets are a labyrinth of ascents, descents, corners with flowers, old wooden doors painted indigo blue.

Panoramic viewpointFrom various points in the village (especially the upper area, near the cemetery) you have breathtaking views of the Salares river valley and the surrounding mountains.

Less touristy = authentic experienceThere are no souvenir shops in Salares. You might see 3-4 tourists at most. Neighbours greet you, doors are open, cats sleep on the stairs. It is the real Axarquia.

Coffee in the town square: Bar El Pósito (next to the square). Coffee and toast: 2,50€. Ask the attendant for curiosities about the village, they are charming.

ParkingFree at the entrance of the village or in the main square.

💡 Local Council: Salares celebrates the Fête de la Chandeleur (French origin) in February. Many foreigners live here and have brought their traditions with them. If you visit at that time, it is a curious experience.

STOP 2: SEDELLA (11:30 - 13:00)

📍 Distance from Salares: 8 km : 8 km ⏱ Time: 12 minutes

The road from Salares to Sedella is one of those roads that you will want to do twice. Panoramic views of the Sierra de Tejeda (with La Maroma, the highest peak in the province of Malaga - 2068m), green valleys, and that mountain silence that relaxes the soul.

What to see in Sedella:

Moorish cemeteryYes, you read that right. Sedella has a 16th century Moorish cemetery unique in Europe. It is at the entrance to the village, signposted. It is a small place, with tombs facing Mecca according to Islamic tradition. It is a very important historical testimony of the expulsion of the Moors. Free admission, There is an information panel.

Views of Sierra TejedaFrom the village you have frontal views of the Sierra Tejeda and La Maroma. If you are a hiker, this is one of the starting points to climb La Maroma (6-7 hours hike, only for experienced hikers).

Walk through the villageSedella is quiet, white, full of photogenic corners. It has less than 600 inhabitants. Take a leisurely stroll.

Ideal for photosEvery corner, every street, every blue door with flowerpots. It is a 100% village that can be Instagrammed without filters.

Where to have a drink: Bar El Refugio (Plaza de España). Cold beer, tapa included, in the shaded square. 2€.

Parking: Parking in the main square (free).

STOP 3: CANILLAS DE ACEITUNO (13:30 - 16:00)

📍 Distance from Sedella: 10 km : 10 km : 10 km ⏱ Time: 15 minutes

Canillas de Aceituno is the «gateway» to the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park. It is a beautiful white village with a lot of mountain character.

What to do in Canillas de Aceituno:

Visiting the Visitor CentreThe Visitor Centre of the Natural Park is on the outskirts of the village. Information on hiking trails, flora, fauna, history. Free admission. Open: 10:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 18:00 (times may vary).

Short hiking route (optional): If you feel like stretching your legs, the Route of the Light Factory is an easy and beautiful circular route of 1 hour (3 km) that leaves the village, passes by an old light mill (hydroelectric power station of the 19th century) and returns. Signposted.

Eat at local restaurant:

Mesón Alhambra (Calle Real, 5). Homemade food from the Axarquía. Speciality: Baked goat (typical dish of Canillas, roast kid with spices). Also excellent are the migas con tropezones, gazpacho, and ajoblanco. Menu: 12-14€.
